Orgeat is a powerful weapon in the mixologist's toolkit, typically used in tiki drinks like the classic Mai Tai. Our MONIN Orgeat (essentially an almond syrup) has a great richness to it. Made with pure cane sugar, it is moderately viscous and holds within a variety of recipes. While orgeat is more commonly used by bartenders, it really is a versatile flavour, and can be integrated into your creative take on a home-made cocktail.
What we have come up with is a simple cocktail that uses common ingredients you can find in your kitchen/home bar. This cocktail is called the ‘Garden of Edith’, a simplistic take on a rum sour, with the added flavour dimension of almond.
Start off by adding the following ingredients into a shaker:
The egg white of 1x egg
20ml MONIN Orgeat (Almond syrup)
30ml Apple Juice
30ml Fresh Lime Juice
2 slices of Cucumber
A pinch of Sugar
45ml White Rum
Add Ice, and shake hard for 8 seconds. Double Strain (Use a hawthorne strainer and a fine strainer) into one of the tins, then dump ice, and shake again (using the same shaker, but without the ice this time). This technique is called the ‘reverse dry-shake’; a method in effectively emulsifying the egg white, while adding dilution to the cocktail, and mixing the ingredients together.
Top with soda water, and garnish the cocktail with either a mint sprig, or a thin slice of cucumber, and enjoy.
Try experiment with MONIN orgeat, and let your creativity run free!
